Iridex Corp. of Mountain View, Calif., has announced a partnership with the privately held Peregrine Surgical Ltd. of New Britain, Pa., to expand its ophthalmology product portfolio; Peregrine will be integrated into the Iridex supply chain. Iridex’s ophthalmology surgical instruments include the EndoProbe laser, handpieces and GreenTip cannulas.





ProPhotonix Ltd. of Salem, N.H., will distribute Oclaro’s line of high-power lasers in North America and Europe. Oclaro’s lasers complement ProPhotonix’s low-power laser diodes and modules for medical, defense and security, and instrumentation, and will address other applications, including materials, processing and printing.





Talence, France-based Alphanov, the Optics and Laser Technology Center of the Route des Lasers cluster, and NKT Photonics of Birkerød, Denmark, have partnered to develop interfacing solutions for photonic crystal fibers (PCFs). Alphanov will supply end-treatment solutions for NKT Photonics, including connectors, sealed and cleaved PCFs, end-capped PCFs and PCFs with mode adaptors. The company’s entire product line will be addressed, including active double-clad large-mode-area fibers and rod-type and passive PCFs.





Open Photonics Inc. of Orlando, Fla., and VTT Technical Research Center of Finland have partnered to commercialize VTT’s Fabry-Perot visible and IR spectroscopy and spectral imaging technologies. Open Photonics developed a commercialization model and linked VTT with business partners to bring the spectral engine technology to market. VTT’s sensing platforms have been demonstrated in medical imaging, gas analysis, remote airborne sensing and process monitoring applications.





Cambrios Technologies Corp. of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Novaled AG of Dresden, Germany, have jointly developed a large-area OLED lighting tile using Cambrios’ ClearOhm transparent electrodes for flexible display applications. The metal grid-free tile uses ClearOhm coatings to deliver uniform light emission at significantly less cost than devices composed of indium tin oxide.

Korea-based Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has signed a multiyear license agreement with DigitalOptics Corp. (DOC), a subsidiary of Tessera Technologies Inc., to use DOC’s Face Detection and Face Tracking software in Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphones. The software is part of DOC’s FaceTools suite, which also includes Accurate Eye Tracking and Face Recognition, Smile and Blink Detection.





Elbit Systems of America LLC of Fort Worth, Texas, and Laser Light Engines Inc. of Salem, N.H., have partnered to manufacture a high-power green laser module for digital projection systems. The laser can be incorporated into an RGB laser illumination system with a digitally controllable light source that produces enhanced images with reduced energy and cost for 2-D and 3-D cinema, digital signage and more.

The University of Connecticut has opened an advanced additive manufacturing laboratory in its technology park in Storrs. The center represents collaboration between UConn and United Technologies Corp. company Pratt & Whitney of East Hartford, Conn. The facility features the latest in 3-D manufacturing equipment and rapid prototyping technologies.


Pratt & Whitney design engineer Louis Porretti uses an electron beam melting machine at the new facility at the University of Connecticut.
