CORNING, N.Y., Apr. 7 -- Corning Inc. plans to invest $50 million in building a second facility for manufacturing optical amplifiers. When fully operational, the new plant in Benton Township, Pa., is expected to house approximately 1000 employees and to provide the company with more than double its current capability to manufacture photonic modules. Corning said production is scheduled to begin by mid-July.
Roger G. Ackerman, Corning's chairman and CEO, said, Corning has taken another step in its evolution of becoming the world's leading supplier of photonic products. The insatiable demand for bandwidth, delivered at the speed, efficiency and cost possible only through optical networks, continues to accelerate demand for our products. The Benton Park facility will make it possible for us to continue to capitalize on this tremendous growth opportunity.
