Corning Unveils New, High Performance Fiber

CORNING, N.Y., March 15 -- Corning Inc. unveiled SMF-28e fiber, an extension of its single-mode fiber product line. SMF-28e fiber, designed with low attenuation at the water peak, offers network designers the ability to create high-capacity, low-cost networks. This product is intended for unamplified systems and brings new functionality to service providers, such as ILECs, CLECs, CATV and utilities. Reduced attenuation in the water peak region opens a new operating window, allowing the transmission of more information over the same number of fibers. Corning SMF-28e fiber is currently available worldwide.
The additional operating wavelength potential opened by low attenuation in the water peak region combined with the emergence of systems designed to operate over those wavelengths translate into more options for network designers. They may choose to transmit more channels on a single fiber, to increase channel spacing to facilitate coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) or to reserve the additional wavelengths for future use. SMF-28e fiber allows service providers the opportunity to build for current applications and to design for future upgrades of their systems while enjoying the benefits of single-mode fiber.
