Cymer Names Motohiko Tahara President of Cymer Asia Pacific
Jul 2007
Cymer Inc., a San Diego-based supplier of excimer laser light sources used in semiconductor manufacturing, announced yesterday the appointment of 35-year semiconductor industry veteran Motohiko Tahara as president of Cymer Asia Pacific. Tahara joins Cymer from Ultratech K.K., where he has been CEO since 2005. He also served as president of KLA Tencor Japan from 2002 to 2005 and president of Cymer Japan from 2000 to 2002. Prior to his initial role at Cymer, Tahara served more than nine years with wholly-owned subsidiaries and joint ventures of Applied Materials. During the first 19 years of his career, he held a variety of roles with Sumitomo Corp., including managing director of sales and marketing in a joint venture with GCA Corp., and five years as managing director in the semiconductor manufacturing equipment division of Sumisho Electronics Systems.

A contraction of "excited dimer." The term refers to an excited species made by combination of two identical atoms or molecules, one of which is excited and one of which is at a ground state.
excimer laser
A rare-gas halide or rare-gas metal vapor laser emitting in the ultraviolet (126 to 558 nm) that operates on electronic transitions of molecules, up to that point diatomic, whose ground state is essentially repulsive. Excitation may be by E-beam or electric discharge. Lasing gases include ArCl, ArF, KrCl, KrF, XeCl and XeF.
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
