Flight trials of the BAE Systems Striker helmet-mounted display system have begun on the Eurofighter Typhoon weapon system, being developed by Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. The trial sorties marked the first flights of a binocular, visor-projected, night-vision-capable helmet on a fighter aircraft, the company said. Additional trials are planned throughout 2005, and production-ready versions of the helmet will fly in the latter part of 2005 -- clearing the way for production for Typhoon Tranche 1 and Tranche 2 aircraft. . . . Kollmorgen Corp., Electro-Optical Division, has been awarded a contract to produce submarine periscope systems for the Republic of Singapore Navy. The infrared imaging equipped periscope systems will provide mission-critical, all-weather, visual and electronic search, warning and platform architecture interface capabilities for the Singapore Navy's Challenger-class submarines. Kollmorgen, which is part of Danaher Corp., is working with Shipbuilder Kockums AB of Malmo, Sweden, on the installation and integration of the systems. The work will be performed by Kollmorgen at its Northampton, Mass., Brattleboro, Vt., and Groton, Conn., facilities. . . . Photonics industry veteran Kevin Chittim has joined Radiant Imaging, of Duvall, Wash., as vice president of marketing and sales. He will oversee sales staff and distributors in the US, Europe and Asia and development of display, lighting and scatterometry/ surface measurement markets. Chittim has held senior positions at Melles Griot, Newport Corp., Spectra-Physics and Labsphere.
