NanoOpto Corp., a Somerset, N.J.-based maker of nano-optic devices for optical components and systems with consumer electronics, commercial and communications applications, announced that Nada O’Brien has joined the company as vice president of product development. Prior to joining NanoOpto, O’Brien was product development manager at JDS Uniphase.    . . .    Emeryville, Calif.-based nanotechnology company Nanomix Inc. announced it is collaborating with nanotechnology researchers at the Naval Research Laboratories, the COINS Center at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Pittsburgh to develop medical and biomolecule detection applications that use Sensation, the company's scaleable, nanoelectronic devices that use carbon nanotube sensing elements and proprietary chemistries and have industrial and medical applications.    . . .    Hayward, Calif.-based Glimmerglass, a provider of intelligent optical switches used to monitor and manage optical networks in commercial and defense applications, announced that NTT Leasing has invested $1 million in the company. NTT Leasing is an affiliate of NTT, the largest telecommunications company in Japan. NTT officials say the investment is related to the company's strategy to develop a next-generation network capable of providing broadband services to its more than 60 million customers.

The use of atoms, molecules and molecular-scale structures to enhance existing technology and develop new materials and devices. The goal of this technology is to manipulate atomic and molecular particles to create devices that are thousands of times smaller and faster than those of the current microtechnologies.
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
