Digital Camera Tracks Eye Location

Researchers at the Institute of Information Science of Academia Sinica and National Taiwan University, both in Taipei, have developed a system that adjusts stereoscopic images on a monitor to the position of the viewer's eyes, thus eliminating the need for any headwear during virtual-reality simulations.

The system, reported in the December issue of Optical Engineering, maps the position of a face with a 30-Hz digital camera from Sony Electronics Inc. of Tokyo. A visual blocking program then isolates the positions of the eyes.
