Dynasil Corp.
In Watertown, Mass., Dynasil Corp.’s research division,
Radiation Monitoring Devices Inc., has been granted additional US patent
claims for its advances in a detector material that responds independently to both
neutron and gamma radiation. The current technology for detecting neutrons in homeland
security applications – neutron detectors based on gaseous helium-3 –
is impractical because the gas has limited availability. Dynasil has developed specialized
production furnaces to make the crystals in large volumes, and a high-volume production
facility for the crystals and resulting detectors is being installed at the company’s
Hilger Crystals Div. in Margate, UK. The Hilger facilities will be ready to supply
production volume shipments of the radiation detectors during the third quarter
of 2011. Dynasil’s products have applications in medical imaging and other
areas.
