EOS Secures $82M Defense Order; Global LED Leader Lumileds is Acquired: Week in Brief: 08/08/25

AMSTERDAM, Aug. 8, 2025 — China-based San’an Optoelectronics, an LED chip manufacturer, and Inari Amertron, a Malaysia-based semiconductor test and assembly company, agreed to acquire Lumileds, an LED company, and its European and Asian subsidiaries. The deal covers the Netherlands-based Lumileds' 3300 employees globally, who operate in 15 countries. The transaction is expected to close by the first quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions. Lumileds completed the $238 million sale of its lamps and accessories business less than one year ago.

SAXONBURG, Pa. — Coherent entered a multiyear strategic supply agreement with Apple. Per the agreement, Coherent will continue to produce VCSELs that enable features such as Face ID on iPhone and iPad devices. This work is conducted at Coherent’s facility in Sherman, Texas which hosts 6-in. wafer compound semiconductor epitaxy, fabrication, and device manufacturing platforms for optoelectronic applications.

CANBERRA, Australia — Electro Optic Systems (EOS), a remote weapon systems developer, secured an order for a drone defense capability based on a type of high-power laser. The order is from an unknown NATO-member nation. According to the company, this is the world’s first export order for a 100-kW class laser defense system. The order is valued at €71.4 million ($82 million) and requires production and delivery of capability, as well as spare parts, training, and documentation, to be fulfilled from 2025-2028 by EOS in Singapore.

ORLANDO, Fla. — LightPath Technologies’ subsidiary, G5 Infrared, which manufactures infrared camera systems, commenced production of two high-end cooled infrared camera models redesigned to use LightPath's BlackDiamond (BD) Glass in place of germanium. After G5's acquisition by Lightpath in early 2025, the company began redesigning certain entry-level camera models to use BlackDiamond Glass and move away from germanium in response to Chinese export restrictions on the material.

SEOUL, South Korea — Samsung Display established a foldable OLED display brand, MONT FLEX. Each letter of MONT stands for a technology strength: Mechanical durability; Opto-mechanically flat; Narrow bezels; and a Thin and lightweight design. Samsung’s latest foldable OLED panel has a slim and lightweight design that passed the 500,000-fold durability test. Samsung Display’s foldable OLED is in its seventh year of mass production.

RICHARDSON, Texas — Optex Systems, an optical sighting system manufacturer, received a firm fixed price purchase order of $1.6 million from General Dynamics Land Systems, Canada. The award will go toward laser-protected periscopes for armored vehicles and will be delivered in fiscal 2026. With this order, the current Optex's backlog is in excess of $45 million, according to the company.

PARIS — EssilorLuxottica, a global eyewear firm, acquired Automation & Robotics (A&R), an optical metrology company that serves both mass production facilities and prescription laboratories. A&R provides technology for high-precision machine applications, software solutions, R&D, manufacturing, distribution, and deployment, Through this acquisition, EssilorLuxottica grows its industrial solutions portfolio.

CURTIN, Australia — The International Optical Technologies Association (IOTA) named Aug. 8 as the last day to enter commercial optical security technologies for the Excellence in Optical Technologies Awards. Eligible for nominations are innovative or commercially viable optical security products or techniques that have been introduced or launched since September 2023. The five award categories are: best origination, best disruptive technology, best integrated technology, best product security application, and best decorative/packaging product. The awards will be presented at the annual Optical & Digital Document Security Conference Sept. 15 – 17 in Warsaw, Poland. In addition, a Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to an individual who has made a special contribution to the industry throughout their career.

ISEHARA, Japan — Ichikoh Industries, an automotive parts manufacturer, established a 50:50 joint venture company called JVC in India with TATA AUTOCOMP SYSTEMS (TACO), an automotive part designer and manufacturer. The JVC will work within the Indian automotive market through the partnership between Ichikoh, a company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, which is owned at 61.08% by Valeo, and TACO, an automotive components arm belonging to an industrial conglomerate in India, the Tata Group. TACO and Ichikoh are in talks to finalize an agreement to acquire Valeo Lighting Systems, a business unit of Valeo India Private Limited.

BILLERCA, Mass. — Quanterix Corporation, an ultrasensitive biomarker detection company, entered into a cooperation agreement with Kent Lake Partners LP. The agreement covers, in part, Quanterix's forthcoming appointment of an independent director, planned to take place by the end of this year.
