ESI’s UP123 Dates Asteroids

Electro Scientific Industries Inc. (ESI) of Portland, Ore., a provider of photonic and laser systems for microengineering applications, has announced that its New Wave Research (NWR) Div.’s UP213 laser ablation system enabled the dating of ancient asteroids at the University of Maryland’s department of geology. In conjunction with a high-resolution mass spectrometer, the UP213 system determined the age and elemental composition of two newly discovered ancient asteroidal fragments by measuring their isotopic ratios. The results could yield new insight into the early formation of our solar system.

laser ablation
Laser ablation is a process that involves the removal or erosion of material from a target surface using laser energy. This technique is widely used in various scientific, industrial, and medical applications. The intense energy from the laser beam interacts with the material, causing it to undergo physical and chemical changes, ultimately leading to its removal. Key features of laser ablation include: Laser energy: A high-energy laser beam is directed onto the surface of a material. The...
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
