Finalists Announced for Round 4 of Luminate NY Accelerator

Empire State Development announced the 10 finalists selected to take part in the fourth round of the Luminate NY accelerator program and competition. The finalists were selected from a pool of 126 startups from 22 countries and 21 U.S. states. They had applied for consideration and pitched their ideas and innovations to an advisory panel of industry experts.

Each finalist will receive an initial investment of $100,000 and will have the chance to compete for up to $2 million in follow-on funding upon completion of the accelerator program. This fourth cohort of Luminate NY will begin on April 5. The six-month program will help the companies speed the commercialization of their technologies and business. Funding for the $25 million program, which is administered by NextCorps, is provided through the Finger Lakes Forward Upstate Revitalization Initiative.

GLOSSARY
nanotechnology
The use of atoms, molecules and molecular-scale structures to enhance existing technology and develop new materials and devices. The goal of this technology is to manipulate atomic and molecular particles to create devices that are thousands of times smaller and faster than those of the current microtechnologies.
lidar
An acronym of light detection and ranging, describing systems that use a light beam in place of conventional microwave beams for atmospheric monitoring, tracking and detection functions. Ladar, an acronym of laser detection and ranging, uses laser light for detection of speed, altitude, direction and range; it is often called laser radar.
machine vision
Interpretation of an image of an object or scene through the use of optical noncontact sensing mechanisms for the purpose of obtaining information and/or controlling machines or processes.
