Flexible CIGS Solar Cell Delivers 13% Efficiency

ALBANY, N.Y., March 12, 2013 — Magnolia Solar Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Magnolia Solar Corp., has demonstrated a flexible copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) solar cell with a 13 percent efficiency.

The CIGS solar cell, made using thin, flexible stainless steel and titanium substrates, was developed and produced by the US Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium (PVMC) at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering’s (CNSE) Solar Energy Development Center (SEDC) in Halfmoon. The efficiency rivals that of current photovoltaic technologies, proving that flexible thin-film solar cells are a potential viable solution for various energy needs.

The demonstration, the result of a collaborative research effort between Magnolia Solar, CNSE and PVMC, is supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

Magnolia Solar will continue to work with CNSE to further develop high-efficiency flexible solar cells for defense and commercial applications as well as nanostructured antireflection coating technology for solar cell applications.

The company has filed several patents to protect its intellectual property.
