FluxData Licenses Imaging Patent

Multispectral imaging systems provider FluxData Inc. of Rochester, N.Y., has licensed Patent No. 7554586 titled “System and Method for Scene Image Acquisition and Spectral Estimation Using a Wide-Band Multi-Channel Image Capture,” from Rochester Institute of Technology. Developed at the Munsell Color Science Lab at the institute, the technology will allow FluxData to develop low-cost, highly color accurate camera systems for a range of markets, including defense, security, surveillance, entertainment, medical and life sciences, industrial vision and agriculture. The company plans to introduce the technology in a new line of Better Color camera systems and software applications in the third quarter of 2011. It will integrate the Better Color technology into its existing FD-1665 three-CCD multispectral camera product line.

GLOSSARY
multispectral imaging
Multispectral Imaging: Creation of an image where each pixel contains more than three spectral data points, typically four to 20. This is contrasted with a standard color camera that only captures three spectral data points (called RGB), or hyperspectral cameras, which capture hundreds of spectral data points. Traditional multispectral cameras captured four data points: RGB and an NIR band. Nowadays multispectral cameras are available as commercial off-the-shelf products, with 12 custom bands...
