FluxData Licenses RIT Imaging Patent

Multispectral imaging systems provider FluxData Inc. has licensed patent No. 7,554,586 from the Rochester Institute of Technology, titled “System and Method for Scene Image Acquisition and Spectral Estimation Using a Wide-Band Multi-Channel Image Capture.”

Developed at the Munsell Color Science Lab at RIT, the technology will allow FluxData to develop low-cost, highly color accurate camera systems for a range of applications and markets, including defense, security, surveillance, entertainment, medical and life sciences, industrial vision and agriculture.

FluxData plans to introduce the technology in a new line of Better Color camera systems and software applications in the third quarter of 2011. Additionally, the company will integrate the Better Color technology into its existing FD-1665 3CCD multispectral camera product line as an option to provide better color discrimination and accuracy than in existing RGB 3CCD cameras.

“It is very exciting to see our invention developed into a product,” said Dr. Roy S. Berns, co-inventor and director of the Munsell laboratory. “My research goal was to bridge the gap between RGB and hyperspectral imaging, providing a practical approach to both improved color accuracy and spectral estimation.”

Glossary
hyperspectral imaging
Hyperspectral imaging is an advanced imaging technique that captures and processes information from across the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike traditional imaging systems that record only a few spectral bands (such as red, green, and blue in visible light), hyperspectral imaging collects data in numerous contiguous bands, covering a wide range of wavelengths. This extended spectral coverage enables detailed analysis and characterization of materials based on their spectral signatures. Key...
multispectral imaging
Multispectral imaging is a technique that involves capturing and analyzing images at multiple discrete spectral bands within the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike hyperspectral imaging, which acquires data across a continuous range of wavelengths, multispectral imaging is characterized by capturing information at several specific, predefined bands. This allows for the extraction of spectral signatures and information from different parts of the spectrum. Key aspects of multispectral imaging...
