G&H to Supply Periscopes for UK Tank Program

ILMINSTER, England, Sept. 29, 2022 — G&H has won a contract to supply periscope technology as part of the U.K.’s Challenger 3 program, to upgrade the British army’s main battle tanks. Rheinmetall Electronics UK awarded the £4.1 million ($4.4 million) Challenger 3 contract to G&H for the supply of a custom specific variant of its Embedded Image Periscope (EIP) for integration into the Trailblazer Driver Vision System. Challenger 3 is a new main battle tank being developed by Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL), a joint venture between BAE Systems and Rheinmetall.

The EIP, part of G&H’s Kent defense brand, has been adapted specifically for the Challenger 3 driver compartment. The product has been configured to provide protection in specific battle conditions and customized to work as an integrated part of REUK’s Trailblazer.

The device includes a novel display for comfortable viewing for the vehicle driver while on long-duration missions and incorporates integrated electronic display and classic direct view periscope technology. It has a newly designed compact binocular system to aid eye relief.

The Challenger 3 EIP design and prototype systems will be completed in the newly established G&H Optical Systems Innovation Hub in St. Asaph, North Wales. Production manufacturing will take place at the G&H flagship manufacturing site in Ilminster.

GLOSSARY
periscope
An optical instrument designed to displace the line of sight in a vertical direction. For submarines and other military uses the periscope is a long tube containing prisms at both ends and intervening imaging and relaying lenses. Several anatomical inspection devices such as cystoscopes, laryngoscopes and otoscopes use similar optical systems, though on a minuscule scale.
electro-optics
1. The branch of physics that deals with the use of electrical energy to create or manipulate light waves, generally by changing the refractive index of a light-propagating material; 2. Collectively, the devices used to affect the intersection of electrical energy and light. Compare with optoelectronics.
optoelectronics
A sub-field of photonics that pertains to an electronic device that responds to optical power, emits or modifies optical radiation, or utilizes optical radiation for its internal operation. Any device that functions as an electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical transducer. Electro-optic often is used erroneously as a synonym.
