Headwall Photonics’ Hyperspec Selected for Airborne Apps

Headwall Photonics announced that its Hyperspec short-wave infrared (SWIR) sensors were selected for airborne applications after the successful completion of rigorous performance testing at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL).

Hyperspectral imaging allows the identification of objects within the sensor’s field of view based on the target’s chemical “fingerprint” or spectral signature.

Based on a patented sensor design, Headwall’s Hyperspec sensors are designed specifically for high spectral and spatial imaging in harsh operating environments such as those required for airborne missions. The sensors were optimized for high signal-to-noise performance and light-weighted for airborne deployment.

“We are excited that NRL selected the high-efficiency Hyperspec platform for their airborne program,” said CEO David Bannon. “Our hyperspectral sensor platform has played a key role at NRL for quite a few years now — ranging from the deployment of the NRL Ocean PHILLS sensor to the Navy’s Project Warhorse to more recent deployments.”

hyperspectral imaging
Hyperspectral imaging is an advanced imaging technique that captures and processes information from across the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike traditional imaging systems that record only a few spectral bands (such as red, green, and blue in visible light), hyperspectral imaging collects data in numerous contiguous bands, covering a wide range of wavelengths. This extended spectral coverage enables detailed analysis and characterization of materials based on their spectral signatures. Key...
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
