BOZEMAN, Mont., March 9, 2011 — ILX Lightwave Corp. announced the donation of $10,000 worth of ultralow-noise laser diode instrumentation to the University of Illinois to enhance its experimental research.

Dr. Lynford Goddard, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, will use the equipment to study a novel family of reflective photonic devices based on a distributed Bragg reflector in a microring resonator.

The laser diode instrumentation company donated an ultralow-noise laser diode current source, temperature controller and laser diode mounts.

Over the past five years, ILX Lightwave has donated $20,000 in equipment annually to colleges and universities. It has begun accepting applications for the 2012 award.

Glossary
distributed bragg reflector
A device similar to distributed feedback lasers in construction and operation, but in which the period grating that produces feedback is removed from the gain region to simplify fabrication. The gratings at each end of the active region act as simple reflectors.
