Intel Honors Tyndall Researcher for Photonics

Brian Corbett of Tyndall National Institute has received the Intel Outstanding Researcher Award for his work in developing photonics for applications in semiconductor technology.

The award, which has been won by a Tyndall researcher three of the 11 times it has been presented, honors outstanding contributions by researchers who are funded by Intel’s Semiconductor Technology Council.

Corbett’s research focused on investigating the critical light source for fiber connections to the CPU in a computer. His team has delivered practical results consistently over several years, and its expertise in device fabrication and characterization has enabled the project to achieve its key milestones, Intel said.

Also, by regular contact with Intel headquarters in Portland, Ore., Corbett has provided insight and understanding into the behavior of fabricated photonic devices and associated assembly challenges, while working on ways to improve the design and process flow.

“This award recognizes that the research conducted by Brian Corbett is of the highest quality worldwide and is extremely relevant to the challenges faced by today’s semiconductor industry,” said Dr. Kieran Drain, CEO of Tyndall National Institute. “Tyndall is focused on carrying out leading research, development and innovation that can deliver concrete economic and societal impact through excellence.”

The award was presented in June during Nanoweek 2013 by Dr. Kelin Kuhn, Intel Fellow and director of advanced device technology at the Technology Manufacturing Group.
