JDSU Optical Coating Improves Light Sensing in Consumer Electronics

New microlithography, or patterning processes, were developed for JDSU’s optical coatings to improve light sensing intelligence in a variety of consumer electronic products, the company said.

Coatings patterned with the new processes are layered onto optical sensors that allow products to sense and adjust according to ambient light conditions. End products with the new development include smart phones with lighted screens that fade out when pressed to a caller’s ear, and dashboard displays in automobiles that adjust light intensity based on external conditions.

“There is a continued need to feed computer chips with more information so that end products can better recognize and respond to what is happening in the external environment,” said Markus Bilger, product manager for Custom Optics at JDSU.

Patterned on 200-mm wafers, the optical coatings let manufacturers in the optoelectronics and imaging industries create smaller products that have more layers of functionality embedded within the coatings at lower prices.

JDSU provides communications test and measurement solutions and optical products for telecommunications service providers, cable operators, network equipment manufacturers, enterprise customers and mobile operators.

Glossary
microlithography
A technique for producing micron-size structures on surfaces by using short-wavelength light or electron beams.
optical coatings
Optical coatings are thin layers of materials applied to optical components, such as lenses, mirrors, filters, and prisms, to modify their reflective and transmissive properties. These coatings are designed to enhance the performance of optical systems by controlling the way light interacts with the surfaces of the components. The primary purposes of optical coatings include: Antireflection coating: This type of coating is designed to reduce reflections from the surfaces of optical...
optoelectronics
Optoelectronics is a branch of electronics that focuses on the study and application of devices and systems that use light and its interactions with different materials. The term "optoelectronics" is a combination of "optics" and "electronics," reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of this field. Optoelectronic devices convert electrical signals into optical signals or vice versa, making them crucial in various technologies. Some key components and applications of optoelectronics include: ...
