Peabody, Mass.-based JEOL USA has announced that the University of Texas at El Paso has selected its 300-keV JEM-3200FS cryoelectron microscope with an omega energy filter for its emerging structural biology program. The transmission electron microscope, which is designed for high resolution and increased contrast, will be housed in a campus building that should be completed in 2011. The university will use the microscope for single-particle reconstruction and tomography.

Glossary
contrast
The apparent difference in brightness between light and dark areas of an image. For a light target against a dark background, contrast is computed as follows: where Lt is the luminance of the target and Lb is the luminance of the background.
microscope
An instrument consisting essentially of a tube 160 mm long, with an objective lens at the distant end and an eyepiece at the near end. The objective forms a real aerial image of the object in the focal plane of the eyepiece where it is observed by the eye. The overall magnifying power is equal to the linear magnification of the objective multiplied by the magnifying power of the eyepiece. transmission electron microscope
A transmission electron microscope (TEM) is a powerful microscopy technique that uses a beam of electrons to create high-resolution images of extremely thin samples. In a TEM, electrons are transmitted through the sample rather than being bounced off its surface, as in scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
