Kollmorgen Nets $9M Contract

Kollmorgen Electro-Optical Corp. has been awarded a $9.3 million US Navy contract for work supporting photonics mast imaging systems on submarines.

Under the indefinite delivery indefinite quantity contract from the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Div. in Newport, Va., Kollmorgen will install and then provide repair and maintenance services for the AN/BVS-1 and the Photonics Mast Variant (PMV) photonics imaging systems.

The non-hull-penetrating AN/BVS-1 photonics mast is designed to replace a traditional optical periscope to provide US submarines with a greater ability to perform surveillance and gather intelligence. The mast contains cameras, a multispectral suite of stablized electro-optical sensors, an eye-safe laser rangefinder, advanced displays and thermal imaging sensors, among other features.

Seventy percent of the work will be performed in Groton, Conn., and 30 percent at Kollmorgen's Northampton headquarters. The contract is expected to be completed by December 2013.

Glossary
periscope
An optical instrument designed to displace the line of sight in a vertical direction. For submarines and other military uses the periscope is a long tube containing prisms at both ends and intervening imaging and relaying lenses. Several anatomical inspection devices such as cystoscopes, laryngoscopes and otoscopes use similar optical systems, though on a minuscule scale.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
rangefinder
1. An optical distance finder that depends on triangulation of two convergent beams on an object from disparate view points. 2. A device that depends on the measurement of time of wave travel from an object to a point, as in radar, sonar and laser systems.
sensor
1. A generic term for detector. 2. A complete optical/mechanical/electronic system that contains some form of radiation detector.
