Laser-Guided Rocket System Tested by Australian Military

NASHUA, N.H., Oct. 13, 2014 — BAE Systems said its semi-active laser-guide rocket system could be adopted by the Australian Defence Forces following recent testing.

The Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System scored direct hits in each of seven live-fire exercises held in August Woomera Prohibited Area test range in South Australia. It was the first time the system was used with 2.75-in. Forges de Zeebrugge (FZ) rockets. The U.S. military has used the system on Hydra rockets since 2012.

Further testing next month could lead to the system being integrated on two types of helicopter used by the Australian military starting in 2015, BAE said.

The Australian military is seeking to bridge the capability gap between unguided small-diameter rockets and larger-diameter anti-armor munitions. The laser system is intended for strikes on soft and lightly armored targets.
