Lidar Firm Innoviz Establishes Industry Partnership with Outsight

Lidar sensor and perception software producer Innoviz Technologies has established a partnership with fellow lidar technology company Outsight Technologies a developer of real-time 3D lidar perception software. The partnership will combine Innoviz’s InnovizOne lidar technology with Outsight’s spatial intelligence software solution, allowing seamless integration of 3D localization and perception technology for smart infrastructure, vehicle, and industrial applications.

The partnership further aims to facilitate and accelerate the adoption of 3D lidar technology beyond the ADAS market. The companies identified infrastructure applications: intelligent transportation systems, security, and people flow monitoring; commercial vehicle and robot applications; construction equipment, logistics, and service robotics; and industrial applications, including volume measurement, industrial equipment, safety, and agriculture as those that the partnership targets.

Raul Bravo, president and co-founder of Outsight, said, “We aren’t in the early days of lidar anymore. At that time demonstration-level sensor prototypes and research-level algorithms were sufficient to ignite the market and gave birth to the current leaders in lidar hardware and software. Nonautomotive markets that will deploy lidar at scale require a whole new level of maturity, with high-performing and reliable hardware like Innoviz’s lidar sensors, combined with scalable and easy-to-use software solutions like Outsight’s.”

The partnership follows a wave of recent announcements in the lidar industry, including the November merger of Velodyne and OusterIbeo’s sale of assets to MicroVision Inc.; and Quanergy’s Chapter 11 process.

Glossary
lidar
Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and characteristics of objects and surfaces. Lidar systems typically consist of a laser scanner, a GPS receiver, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), all integrated into a single system. Here is how lidar works: Laser emission: A laser emits laser pulses, often in the form of rapid and repetitive laser...
