M Squared Demonstrates 'Quantum Gravimeter'

Quantum laser developer M Squared has demonstrated the U.K.’s first industrial quantum gravity technology — a quantum gravimeter.

The device, which can measure gravity, is crucial for such applications as the detection of new oil and gas deposits, surveying unknown underground infrastructures such as pipes and cables, monitoring the water table and preventing flooding and geological surveying.

“A quantum gravimeter can detect and measure atomic interference, a manifestation of wave-particle duality that matter can display when it is in a quantum state at temperatures just above absolute zero,” said Graeme Malcolm, CEO and co-founder of M Squared. “It uses quantum technology to bring unprecedented levels of precision to gravitational measurements and the detection of gravitational fields of hidden objects.”

Named the ANAGRAM project, cofunded by Innovate UK and the UK National Quantum Technologies Program, the device combines the engineering and system integration of M Squared with the expertise of the University of Birmingham’s rofessor Kai Bongs and his group.

“Quantum gravimetry will bring a range of economic, social and environmental benefits in the coming years,” Malcolm said. “Applications can be envisaged in many sectors, from the detection of new oil and gas deposits, surveying unknown underground infrastructures such as pipes and cables, even monitoring the water table. If we can transfer the technology into accurate seismic mapping, it could be used to predict natural disasters ranging from avalanches and volcanic eruptions to tsunamis.”

M Squared designs and manufactures a range of award winning laser systems for scientific researchers.

Glossary
quantum
The term quantum refers to the fundamental unit or discrete amount of a physical quantity involved in interactions at the atomic and subatomic scales. It originates from quantum theory, a branch of physics that emerged in the early 20th century to explain phenomena observed on very small scales, where classical physics fails to provide accurate explanations. In the context of quantum theory, several key concepts are associated with the term quantum: Quantum mechanics: This is the branch of...
metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
