HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, June 1, 2016 — Smart material and photonics technology developer Metamaterial Technologies Inc. (MTI) has acquired the business of nanotechnology provider Rolith Inc.

The business includes Rolith’s proprietary manufacturing technology, rolling mask lithography (RML), NanoWeb products, intellectual property, proprietary tools and R&D facilities specific to Rolith’s large surface area lithography platform and key employees.

"Rolith's existing business line and RML technology will complement MTI's capabilities and extend its market offerings,” said Maurice Guitton, MTI's board chairman. “This acquisition will establish the company as a forerunner in the industry and will enhance the company's future growth and performance.”

Metamaterials aims to create the next generation of smart, multifunctional materials to change the way we use, interact and benefit from light.

MTI Founder and CEO George Palikaras described the acquisition as strategic, and a move that the company expects will help it overcome what Palikaras described as the industry’s biggest challenge, the absence of viable manufacturing tools to produce large-scale, high-volume optical metamaterial products. He said Rolith's patented RML lithographic technology will allow the company to scale-up manufacturing to meet demand.

A material engineered from artificial matter not found in nature. The artificial makeup and design of metamaterials give them intrinsic properties not common to conventional materials that are exploited as light waves and sound waves interact with them. One of the most active areas of research involving metamaterials currently explores materials with a negative refractive index. In optics, these negative refractive index materials show promise in the fabrication of lenses that can achieve...
