Motion Sensors Compensate for Image Blurring

Using integrated accelerometers to detect the vibration in an imaging system, suggest researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba, Israel, offers an accurate means to correct for displacement and blur. In a report of the technique that appeared in the November issue of Optical Engineering, they cite a mean squared error of 0.16 to 0.47 percent in their measurements of the line spread function.

To test the approach, the scientists attached two dual-axis accelerometers from Analog Devices to a Pulnix progressive-scan video camera set to no-shutter mode. An electromagnetic shaker driven by an arbitrary waveform generator induced sinusoidal vibrations in the camera as it imaged an LED, and a LeCroy digital oscilloscope sampled the accelerometer signals for calculation of the motion function.
