IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 9, 2011 — Ophir Optronics Ltd. shareholders have approved the electro-optics systems maker's acquisition by Newport Corp. and regulators have approved the $230 million deal, the two companies announced Thursday. The acquisition is expected to close in early October, subject to satisfaction of the remaining closing conditions.

"We are pleased that we are making excellent progress toward closing this transaction, and we are very excited to have Ophir join the Newport team," said Newport President and CEO Robert J. Phillippy.

Jerusalem-based Ophir also makes photonics instrumentation systems and 3-D noncontact measurement systems. It will become the third division of Newport, joining Lasers and Photonics and Precision Technologies. (See also: Newport to Acquire Ophir Optronics)

1. The branch of physics that deals with the use of electrical energy to create or manipulate light waves, generally by changing the refractive index of a light-propagating material; 2. Collectively, the devices used to affect the intersection of electrical energy and light. Compare with optoelectronics.
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
