Northrop Grumman to Upgrade Hawk’s EO-IR Sensors

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., March 27, 2013 — Northrop Grumman Corp. has enhanced its electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors for the Hawk air defense system, more than doubling their resolution.

The fourth-generation tracking adjunct sensor (4G TAS) is a gimbaled, stabilized sensor system that provides passive EO/IR searching, tracking, launch and pass-off capability. It provides threat assessment and identification beyond the visual range to provide real-time situational awareness. It also detects and tracks low, fast targets both day and night, passing them to the Hawk’s fire control radar.

Upgrades include a 640 × 480-pixel infrared sensor, a CCD camera that increases resolution and enhances operation in low-light environments, and more reliable and sustainable electronics for continued system logistics support.

All existing TAS, Improved TAS and Advanced Infrared TAS systems can be upgraded to the 4G TAS configuration.
