SPIE-Press_Fischer.jpgBased on a SPIE professional course, the book Optical System Design, Second Edition, presents techniques and diagrams that illustrate major design procedures. The 624-page resource features new chapters on polarization, diffractive optics, optomechanical design, systems analysis and stray light suppression. It includes chapters on glass selection, geometrical aberrations and how to eliminate them, spherical and aspheric surfaces, computer performance evaluation and optical path difference. Numerous examples are provided to explain the techniques. Applications such as digital imaging, machine vision and telecommunications are addressed. Robert E. Fischer, Biljana Tadic-Galeb and Paul R. Glossary
diffractive optics
Optical elements that use diffraction to control wavefronts. Diffractive optical elements include diffraction gratings, surface-relief diffractive lenses, holographic optical elements and computer-generated holograms. Fabrication methods include diamond machining, interference of coherent beams (holography), injection molding and advanced microlithographic techniques. See also binary optics; holographic optical element.
polarization
Polarization refers to the orientation of oscillations in a transverse wave, such as light waves, radio waves, or other electromagnetic waves. In simpler terms, it describes the direction in which the electric field vector of a wave vibrates. Understanding polarization is important in various fields, including optics, telecommunications, and physics. Key points about polarization: Transverse waves: Polarization is a concept associated with transverse waves, where the oscillations occur...
