Optical chip manufacturers Avanex Corp. of Fremont, Calif., CyOptics Inc. of Breinigsville, Pa., Opnext Inc. of Eatontown, N.J., and Japan-based Eudyna Devices Inc. of Yokohama, Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. of Osaka, and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. and Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd., both of Tokyo, have released common specifications for optical devices with an SC connector interface, based on a 10-Gb/s miniature device multisource agreement (XMD-MSA).

The specifications are designed for applications from short- to long-reach-transmission functions and to enable the use of optical devices from multiple suppliers. The XMD-MSA has been created to establish compatible sources of 10-Gb/s transmitter and receiver optical subassemblies embedded in the 10-Gb/s agreement modules, which are designed for use in large-capacity network and data storage systems. The specifications cover devices that comply with interface standards, including 10 Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Fiber Channel and SONET OC-192.
