Owl Autonomous Imaging Nets $15M in Series A Funding

Owl Autonomous Imaging (Owl AI), a developer of monocular 3D thermal imaging and ranging solutions for automotive safety applications, has raised $15 million in Series A funding. State Farm Ventures led the round.

The foundation of the company’s technology is an adaptation of a thermal ranging solution developed to track missiles in flight traveling at over 1000 mph. Owl has developed a 3D thermal ranging camera for advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicles. The solid-state camera delivers high-definition thermal video with high-precision ranging for safe autonomous vehicle operation.

Owl’s monocular 3D thermal ranging modality is based on high-definition thermal imaging and computer vision algorithms. The algorithms operate in the thermal spectrum and exploit angular, temporal, and intensity data to produce ultradense point clouds and refined object classification.

Glossary
machine vision
Machine vision, also known as computer vision or computer sight, refers to the technology that enables machines, typically computers, to interpret and understand visual information from the world, much like the human visual system. It involves the development and application of algorithms and systems that allow machines to acquire, process, analyze, and make decisions based on visual data. Key aspects of machine vision include: Image acquisition: Machine vision systems use various...
thermal imaging
The process of producing a visible two-dimensional image of a scene that is dependent on differences in thermal or infrared radiation from the scene reaching the aperture of the imaging device.
point cloud
A point cloud is a set of data points in a three-dimensional coordinate system, where each point represents a specific location in space. These points are typically obtained through various sensing techniques such as lidar (light detection and ranging), photogrammetry, structured light scanning, or 3D scanning. Each point in a point cloud is defined by its spatial coordinates (x, y, z), representing its position in three-dimensional space, as well as potentially additional attributes such as...
computer vision
Computer vision enables computers to interpret and make decisions based on visual data, such as images and videos. It involves the development of algorithms, techniques, and systems that enable machines to gain an understanding of the visual world, similar to how humans perceive and interpret visual information. Key aspects and tasks within computer vision include: Image recognition: Identifying and categorizing objects, scenes, or patterns within images. This involves training algorithms...
monocular
1. Viewed with one eye. 2. Describing an image as viewed from a single angle.
