Pencil-thin LCD Panel Debuts

SEOUL, Korea, May 20, 2009 -- LG Display Co. Ltd. announced Tuesday that by using an LED backlight assembly and other slimming technologies, it has developed large LCD TV panels that are only as thick as a pencil and weigh less than 16 lbs.

The 42- and 47-in. LCD TV panels employ LG Display’s edge-lit LED backlight system instead of the commonly used CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) to realize a panel thickness of 5.9 mm, or .23 in., which is about as thick as a pencil.

LG Display’s LGS (light guide sheet) technology enabled it to reduce the thickness of the light guide plate, which changes the direction of light beams, by more than half, the company said.

In addition, the 42- and 47-in. panels, at 6.1 kg (13.4 lbs) and 7.3 kg (16 lbs) each, are about 50 percent lighter than the same size of conventional CCFL-backlit product.

The full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) displays have a color saturation level of 80 percent (NTSC) and feature LG Display’s 120 Hz technology with a motion picture response time of 8 ms, eliminating motion blur.
