SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 5, 2010 — Power LED provider Philips Lumileds announced that it shipped its billionth Luxeon power LED in the second quarter of 2010.

The company has delivered more than 750 million Luxeon power LEDs in the past two years to automotive, illumination and consumer electronics customers. This comes just ten years after the new era of lighting, where the company has found it has positioned itself well to support customers’ development and introduction of new lighting solutions.

Its mission was to enable a new world of lighting through power LED applications, the company said. Prior to its invention of the power LED—a light emitting diode designed to operate at a current of 350 milliamps or higher—LEDs typically produced only one or two lumens.

Now, the Luxeon power LEDs generate hundreds of lumens, and they are being used in many lighting applications, including LED light bulbs, streetlights, car headlamps and LCD displays.
