Photonics West 2023 Packs New Momentum and Industry Highlights

SPIE’s preeminent photonics technology showcase, Photonics West, continues to rapidly restore the momentum lost during the pandemic. The show, which returns to San Francisco’s Moscone Center Jan. 28-Feb. 2, will feature 4500 presentations and host over 1000 exhibits. Professionals from around the world will convene to sample the latest advancements in optics and photonics technologies.

Attendees at Photonics West 2023 will be able to select technical sessions from over 100 conferences grouped together under the BiOS, LASE, OPTO, and Quantum West symposiums. Program highlights will include several plenary speeches. Gang Zheng from the University of Toronto and Canada’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre will speak at BiOS on porphysome nanotechnology. The popular BiOS Hot Topics will take place on Jan. 28.

Arnan Mitchell of RMIT University will headline LASE, with a plenary on breakthroughs to achieve true integrated circuits. He will emphasize the resurgence of lithium niobate and its potential. During OPTO, MIT’s Rajeev Ram will discuss high-performance electronic-photonic interfaces. Emily Warren from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory will review tandem photovoltaic devices. And Nicolas Grandjean of Switzerland’s École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne will speak on III-nitride semiconductors.

Quantum West will also return, after a strong debut in 2022, and will include five tracks that focus on quantum information systems; quantum communications, computing, and simulation; quantum sensing, imaging, and timing systems; and enabling quantum materials, devices, and techniques.

On the trade show floor, two industry exhibitions will play host to the more than 1000 companies launching products and providing live demonstrations. The BiOS Expo runs Jan. 28-29. Both Photonics West and BiOS are free to attend.

Other highlights at the Photonics West conference include the annual Prism Awards on Feb. 1, hosted by SPIE and media partner Photonics Media. This year’s gala event will be the 15th anniversary of the awards, which honor the best new optics and photonics products on the market.

The annual SPIE Startup Challenge, in which participating companies vie for sponsored prizes and the attention of potential investors, will also return. Competitors will be vetted for their business case, financial case, and competitive advantages by a roster of judges that includes venture capitalists and business development experts.
