After the pandemic forced SPIE to shift Photonics West to an all-virtual format this year, the industry’s largest annual trade show will return to an in-person format at San Francisco’s Moscone Center next month. The event runs from Jan. 22 to 27 and unveils many of the industry’s latest scientific, technical, and business innovations. Photonics West 2022 will showcase the latest discoveries, technologies, and applications in the photonics field across its exhibition floor and at its four conferences. The conference lineup includes BiOS, which highlights new research in biophotonics, biomedical optics, and applications of medical imaging; LASE, which spotlights the development and applications of laser technology; and OPTO, where the focus is on advancements in optoelectronics, photonic materials, and optical devices. Quantum West, SPIE’s newest conference, will be held live for the first time. It will feature presentations from industry leaders working to bring quantum technology to the commercial sphere. Together, SPIE’s four conferences will host over 4000 technical presentations. Elsewhere at the Moscone Center, the BiOS Expo and Photonics West Exhibition will showcase hundreds of new product launches, live demonstrations, and the industry’s largest live display of its broad commercial technologies and services. In addition to the conferences and exhibitions, Photonics West also offers 41 training courses, numerous professional development workshops, a comprehensive job fair, and many networking opportunities for technical professionals and exhibitors. The 2022 edition of Photonics West will also feature a host of industry insights and advancements during its plenary sessions, hot topics courses, and the unveiling of the latest PRISM Award winners. Among the luminaries scheduled to speak are Lawrence Livermore National Lab’s Tammy Ma, who will detail how recent breakthroughs at the National Ignition Facility are paving the way to inertial fusion. Plenary speaker Michael Kues of Leibniz University will share his outlook on integrated photonic quantum frequency combs and their application. Stanford University’s Hongjie Dai will focus his plenary speech on the advancements and benefits of in vivo fluorescence/luminescence biological imaging in the 1000- to 1700-nm window. A fourth plenary, given by Nagoya University’s Hiroshi Amano, will highlight the frontier of electronics in memory of Isamu Akasaki, a distinguished professor of Meijo University and a Nobel laureate, who helped pioneer blue LEDs.
