BLOOMINGTON, Minn., May 5, 2023 — Quantum technology company PsiQuantum expanded its development agreement with SkyWater Technology and its plan to produce silicon photonic chips that will become part of future quantum computing systems. The companies have partnered to develop the chips in SkyWater’s semiconductor manufacturing facility in Bloomington.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Apollo Optical Systems (AOS), a designer and manufacturer of precision optical components and systems, announced receipt of an investment from Pike Street Capital. AOS provides components for OEMs in the industrial metrology, VR, commercial, LED lighting, medical instrument, automotive sensor and lidar, and defense markets. Investment figures were not disclosed.

ROCK HILL, S.C. — 3D Systems entered into an agreement to acquire Wematter, a 3D printer manufacturer that will broaden 3D Systems’ selective laser sintering portfolio. 3D Systems expects the transaction to close in July 2023.

NESS ZIONA, Israel — Semiconductor sensor technology company Newsight Imaging will work with VCSEL technology company Brightlaser Ltd. on a collaboration grant from the Hong Kong-Israel R&D Cooperation Programme to develop a next-generation 3D home and industrial security lidar camera solution. The solution will be based on Newsight Imaging’s eTOF proprietary patented technology and Brightlaser’s VCSEL technology.

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Hesai Technology established a multiyear technology partnership agreement for lidar sensors with Inertial Labs, a developer of mobile robotics navigation systems and inertial measurement units. Inertial Labs selected Hesai’s sensors to provide perception and navigation capabilities for its navigation systems for autonomous marine-, land-, and aerial-based robotics systems.

GLOSSARY
quantum
Smallest amount into which the energy of a wave can be divided. The quantum is proportional to the frequency of the wave. See photon.
lidar
An acronym of light detection and ranging, describing systems that use a light beam in place of conventional microwave beams for atmospheric monitoring, tracking and detection functions. Ladar, an acronym of laser detection and ranging, uses laser light for detection of speed, altitude, direction and range; it is often called laser radar.
laser sintering
Commonly known as 3D printing, this process can create three-dimensional parts by fusing small particles of powder. A CO2 laser is used to fuse the particles into a solid material. The laser can selectively fuse the powders by scanning X and Y cross sections of the powder bed. The system builds the object one layer at a time through the use of supplied 3D CAD data.
wafer
A cross-sectional slice cut from an ingot of either single-crystal, fused, polycrystalline or amorphous material that has refined surfaces either lapped or polished. Wafers are used either as substrates for electronic device manufacturing or as optics. Typically, they are made of silicon, quartz, gallium arsenide or indium phosphide.
