A technique that fuses molecular images and creates a detailed 3-D color representation of the inner workings of the heart has been developed by researchers at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. The procedure could improve the diagnosis of heart disease and also be used to guide the treatment of coronary artery disease, the researchers said. The results were presented in June at the annual meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine in Washington. The 3-D images were created with several techniques. Scans of the coronary arteries, which were taken with CT angiography, were...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESVirginia Tech Receives $2.4M to Optically Measure Brain ActivityResearchers at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSM) received a $2.4 million National Institutes of Health grant to use optically pumped...BioPhotonics Jul/Aug 2021 IssuePotential of Periodic Array System Supports Nanophotonics ApplicationsA research team from the University of New Mexico (UNM) and the Autonomous University of Madrid has applied periodic arrays containing nanoparticles of different sizes — as opposed to more...Photonics Spectra November 2020 IssueLasers Move Diamond Nanoparticles into Bio ApplicationsScientists from Hokkaido University, Osaka Prefecture University, and Osaka University showed the ability to use laser beams of different wavelengths, and from opposing directions, to move diamond...Photonics Spectra June 2021 IssueSPIE, Chinese Laser Press Will Launch Photonics Journal: Week in Brief - 01/21/22BOLTON, Mass. — Headwall Photonics completed a recapitalization led by Arsenal Capital Partners, a private equity firm specializing in investments in industrial and health care companies. Choosing the best CCD for a given application, however, requires knowing how basic chip parameters affect performance.Since their invention in the late 1960s, charge-coupled devices, also called CCDs, have found widespread use in imaging applications. Electronic cameras based on CCD technology are used in...Photonics HandbookFluorescence Lifetime Imaging: Choosing the Best Approach: Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM), which measures the spatial distribution of the fluorescence decay, can be achieved either in the time or in the frequency domain. Each approach exhibits advantages and disadvantages, depending on the type of light detector and acquisition method employed. The term fluorescence is often applied as a synonym for photoluminescence, although luminescence actually covers fluorescence and phosphorescence. Both of these terms describe the process of...Photonics HandbookLasers: Understanding the Basics: Although lasers range from quantum-dot to football-field size and utilize materials from free electrons to solids, the underlying operating principles are always the same. This article provides the basic information about how and why lasers work.Over 60 years have passed since the first demonstration of a laser in 1960. After the initial spark of interest, lasers were for a while categorized as “a solution waiting for a problem,”...Photonics HandbookLight-Emitting Diodes: A Primer: Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are semiconductors that convert electrical energy into light energy. The color of the emitted light depends on the semiconductor material and composition, with LEDs generally classified into three wavelengths: ultraviolet, visible, and infrared. The wavelength range of commercially available LEDs with single-element output power of at least 5 mW is 275 to 950 nm. Each wavelength range is made from a specific semiconductor material family,...Photonics HandbookWHITEPAPERSLight Changes Matter – with Optics, Lasers and SensorsJenoptik is a global OEM supplier of solutions and products based on photonics technologies with more than 25 years experience in the fields of optics, laser technology, digital imaging,...Photonics.com 12/2/2020High-Speed Imaging in Biomedical Microfluidic ResearchThis whitepaper discusses multiple case studies when Phantom cameras have assisted in the advancement of microfluidic and cellular research.Photonics.com 11/17/2020Life Sciences Instrumentation - The Key to Health Care TransformationThe World Health Organization estimates that the number of people over age 60 will increase from 1 billion in the year 2019 to more than 2 billion in 2050, with life expectancy rising as well.
