3 Questions with Keith Paulsen

BioPhotonics spoke with Keith Paulsen, the Robert A. Pritzker Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Dartmouth College’s Thayer School of Engineering. Paulsen and his colleagues recently published a paper (www.doi.org/10.1364/optica.446576) about the use of a deep learning algorithm to accelerate the reconstruction of tissue images by combining scans from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) together with diffused optical signals from near-infrared spectral tomography (NIRST). The resulting images have the potential to reveal whether breast cancer tumors are malignant or benign. Is it...Read full article

    deep learning
Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that involves the use of artificial neural networks to model and solve complex problems. The term "deep" in deep learning refers to the use of deep neural networks, which are neural networks with multiple layers (deep architectures). These networks, often called deep neural networks or deep neural architectures, have the ability to automatically learn hierarchical representations of data. Key concepts and components of deep learning include: ...
