AI, OCT Operate in Tandem to Detect Plaque Erosion in the Heart

CHENGDU, China, June 23, 2022 — Researchers from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China have developed an AI method that can automatically detect plaque erosion in the heart’s arteries using optical coherence tomography (OCT). “If cholesterol plaque lining arteries starts to erode, it can lead to a sudden reduction in blood flow to the heart, known as acute coronary syndrome, which requires urgent treatment,” said research team leader Zhao Wang. “Our new method could help improve the clinical diagnosis of plaque erosion and be used to develop new treatments for patients...Read full article

    Glossary
    optical coherence tomography
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique used in medical and scientific fields to capture high-resolution, cross-sectional images of biological tissues. It provides detailed, real-time, and three-dimensional visualization of tissue structures at the micrometer scale. OCT is particularly valuable in ophthalmology, cardiology, dermatology, and various other medical specialties. Here are the key features and components of optical coherence tomography: Principle of...
    artificial intelligence
The ability of a machine to perform certain complex functions normally associated with human intelligence, such as judgment, pattern recognition, understanding, learning, planning, and problem solving.
    algorithm
A precisely defined series of steps that describes how a computer performs a task.
    neural network
A computing paradigm that attempts to process information in a manner similar to that of the brain; it differs from artificial intelligence in that it relies not on pre-programming but on the acquisition and evolution of interconnections between nodes. These computational models have shown extensive usage in applications that involve pattern recognition as well as machine learning as the interconnections between nodes continue to compute updated values from previous inputs.
