AMS Readies for Dark-Matter Mission

GENEVA, Feb. 17, 2010 – The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) has taken its initial steps in a journey that will take it ultimately to the International Space Station (ISS), where it will be used to look for signs of dark matter. The instrument left CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in a special convoy that is due to arrive at the European Space Agency's research and technology center, ESTEC, at Noordwijk, the Netherlands, in about a week. Once there, the detector will undergo testing of its ability to survive a shuttle lift-off and to operate in space. Twenty members of the AMS collaboration...Read full article

    spectrometer
A kind of spectrograph in which some form of detector, other than a photographic film, is used to measure the distribution of radiation in a particular wavelength region.
    synchrotron
A synchrotron is a type of particle accelerator that uses magnetic fields to steer charged particles, typically electrons or positrons, in a closed, circular or elliptical path. The name synchrotron refers to the synchronization of the accelerating electric field with the increasing particle velocity as they move in a circular path. Synchrotrons are powerful tools used in various scientific and industrial applications, particularly in the generation of intense beams of synchrotron radiation. ...
