A Simpler Way to Store Light

Rather than slowing lightwaves, new technique converts light to slow-moving sound -- and then back again.

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is the bane of fiber laser researchers because it is a parasitic effect that saps the energy out of high-power fiber lasers. But now Zhaoming Zhu and Daniel J. Gauthier of Duke University in Durham, N.C., working with Robert W. Boyd of the University of Rochester in New York, have demonstrated a way to use the effect to store pulses of light for as long as 12 ns in a short length of optical fiber. Figure 1. A Brillouin interaction between incoming data pulses and a write pulse (a) converts the data pulses to an acoustic signal (b) that can be stored...Read full article

    optical fiber
Optical fiber is a thin, flexible, transparent strand or filament made of glass or plastic used for transmitting light signals over long distances with minimal loss of signal quality. It serves as a medium for conveying information in the form of light pulses, typically in the realm of telecommunications, networking, and data transmission. The core of an optical fiber is the central region through which light travels. It is surrounded by a cladding layer that has a lower refractive index than...
    stimulated brillouin scattering
In Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS), an incident photon (usually laser light) interacts with acoustic phonons in a medium. The energy and momentum of the incident photon are transferred to the acoustic phonons, resulting in the creation of a scattered photon with a slightly different frequency (Stokes shift). Another scattered photon, called the anti-Stokes photon, can also be generated with a frequency higher than that of the incident photon. SBS is particularly important in the...
