Air Sensor to Help Asthmatics

ATLANTA, Jan. 28, 2008 -- A new sensor system that can be worn in the pockets of a vest continuously monitors the air for environmental stimuli that play a role in asthma attacks. It is hoped that the system will help researchers better understand what triggers these attacks. “We are investigating whether we can go back after an asthma attack and see what was going on environmentally when the attack started,” said Charlene Bayer, a Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) principal research scientist and one of the system's developers. Georgia Tech Research Institute researchers (l-r) Robert Hendry, Luis Somoza and...Read full article

    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
