Ancient Material Shows High Degree of Birefringence for Use in Displays

SUITA, Japan, April 22, 2019 — When researchers at Osaka University measured the optical birefringence of highly aligned cellulose nanofibers, they found that cellulose’s intrinsic birefringence could be powerful enough to be used in optical displays. For its experiments, the team used unidirectionally aligned cellulose nanofiber films that it created by stretching hydrogels from nata de coco (a jelly-like food produced from coconut water) at different rates. The nata de coco nanofibers allowed a straight line of cellulose chains to be formed at the molecular level, which helped the researchers precisely...Read full article

    birefringence
Birefringence is an optical property of certain materials that causes them to exhibit different refractive indices for light of different polarizations. In other words, when light passes through a birefringent material, it splits into two separate rays, each traveling with a different speed and direction. This phenomenon is also known as double refraction. The difference in refractive indices for the two polarizations is a characteristic feature of birefringent materials. The separation of...
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    optoelectronics
Optoelectronics is a branch of electronics that focuses on the study and application of devices and systems that use light and its interactions with different materials. The term "optoelectronics" is a combination of "optics" and "electronics," reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of this field. Optoelectronic devices convert electrical signals into optical signals or vice versa, making them crucial in various technologies. Some key components and applications of optoelectronics include: ...
