Atom Interferometer Tests Redshift

BERKELEY, Calif., Feb. 19, 2010 - While airplane and rocket experiments have proved that gravity makes clocks tick more slowly – a central prediction of Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity – a new experiment in an atom interferometer measures this slowdown 10,000 times more accurately than before and finds it to be exactly what Einstein predicted. The mirrors and lenses on this optical bench prepare six lasers to capture cold atoms in the atom interferometer. (Image: Damon English/UC Berkeley) The result shows once again how well Einstein’s theory describes the real world, said...Read full article

    Glossary
    einstein
A unit of energy equal to the amount of energy absorbed by one molecule of material undergoing a photochemical reaction, as determined by the Stark-Einstein law.
    quantum mechanics
The science of all complex elements of atomic and molecular spectra, and the interaction of radiation and matter.
    redshift
The displacement of spectrum lines, as determined by the increasing distance between, and the relative velocity of, the observer and a light source, causing the lines to move toward the red portion of the spectrum. It is used in astrophysics to determine the rate of recession or expansion of celestial bodies. Also known as the Hubble effect.
