Karen A. Newman, Group Publisher, [email protected] Both the photonics industry and brain research stand to gain from financial awards and commitments made last month in Washington. The NIH announced $46 million in initial awards in the BRAIN Initiative, a project the White House unveiled in April 2013. More than 100 investigators from several countries will use the funds to develop tools and technologies to better understand neural circuit function and to capture the brain in action. Among the 58 projects funded in this round are a wearable scanner to image the human brain in motion and using lasers to guide nerve cell firing. ...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaArticlesTwo-Photon Holographic Mesoscope Probes Activity Across Large Brain RegionsRecent advancements in two-photon (2P) mesoscopes have extended the field of view (FOV) for deep brain imaging, making it possible to image brain regions as large as 25 mm2.
