Brain Mapping Seeks New Paths

NEW YORK, March 10, 2014 — New imaging techniques could build new roadways in neural mapping and provide a better understanding of how the brain functions. A team at Columbia University — along with researchers from Cornell University, the California Institute of Technology and several technology companies — is now working on the development of such imaging techniques as part of the federal initiative called BRAIN (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies). They agree that photonics will ultimately play a key role in treating brain-related debilitating diseases and conditions. ...Read full article

    GLOSSARY
    illumination
The general term for the application of light to a subject. It should not be used in place of the specific quantity illuminance.
    quantum optics
The area of optics in which quantum theory is used to describe light in discrete units or "quanta" of energy known as photons. First observed by Albert Einstein's photoelectric effect, this particle description of light is the foundation for describing the transfer of energy (i.e. absorption and emission) in light matter interaction.
