CRISPR Technology to Target RNA Viruses Such as COVID-19

Researchers at the New York Genome Center and New York University have developed a new kind of CRISPR screen technology to target RNA. Many CRISPR-based genetic screens can only edit or target DNA, and cannot target RNA viruses like coronavirus or flu. Using a recently characterized CRISPR enzyme called Cas13 that targets RNA instead of DNA, the researchers engineered a platform for massively parallel genetic screens targeting messenger RNAs of a green fluorescent protein transgene and other cell-surface proteins in human cells. By targeting thousands of different sites in human RNA...Read full article

    Glossary
    fluorescent protein
Fluorescent proteins are proteins that exhibit the property of fluorescence, which is the ability to absorb light at a specific wavelength and emit light at a longer wavelength. These proteins are widely used as molecular tags or markers in molecular and cellular biology to visualize and study the location, movement, and interactions of specific proteins within living cells or organisms. Key features and points about fluorescent proteins include: Fluorescence emission: Fluorescent proteins...
    machine learning
Machine learning (ML) is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on the development of algorithms and statistical models that enable computers to improve their performance on a specific task through experience or training. Instead of being explicitly programmed to perform a task, a machine learning system learns from data and examples. The primary goal of machine learning is to develop models that can generalize patterns from data and make predictions or decisions without being...
    flow cytometry
Flow cytometry is a powerful technique used in biology and medicine for the quantitative analysis of the physical and chemical characteristics of cells and particles suspended in a fluid. The method allows for the rapid measurement of multiple parameters simultaneously on a cell-by-cell basis. It is widely used in various fields, including immunology, microbiology, hematology, and cancer research. Here are the key components and features of flow cytometry: Sample preparation: Cells or...
