Chip and component developer CST Global Ltd. has commissioned its second metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) reactor in collaboration with the University of Glasgow (UG). While the reactor is owned by UG, it is sited, managed, and operated at CST Global’s production site, allowing the company to undertake joint research projects under the guidance of Richard Hogg, professor of photonics, without downtime on commercial MOCVD production. CST Global also gains additional capacity as part of the collaboration. “Two projects are already in development,” Hogg said. “The reactor has a unique, high-temperature operation, which facilitates InP laser production using overgrowth on silicon wafers. We are also adding the capacity for iron doping for heat dissipation to allow increased power and brightness in both distributed feedback and buried heterostructure lasers.” All development projects are funded by Innovate UK and the U.K.’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
