Coral reefs comprise arguably some of the most diverse, fragile and beautiful ecosystems on the planet. Their structure, composed mainly of calcium carbonate secreted by living coral polyps, provides shelter for fish and marine invertebrates and helps protect nearby shorelines from erosion.
