Color in Nanocrystalline LEDs Can Be Tuned

A novel, economical way to tune the color of LEDs by altering the semiconductor nanocrystals used to make them could be applicable for industrial-scale production. The color of some LEDs can be tuned by modifying the size of the semiconductor crystals that compose the light-emitting layer. In crystals that are only a few nanometers in size, quantum mechanical effects can affect the LED. Quantum-confined metal halide perovskites offer narrowband, color-pure emitters. Researchers at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, in collaboration with researchers at the University of Linz,...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
